Magic Leap 2 sold enterprise AR, not a room-visible hologram

What you see

Magic Leap made its second headset, Magic Leap 2, generally available on 30 September 2022. The company’s own pre-launch product page billed it plainly as ‘the most immersive AR platform for enterprise, available September 30, 2022,’ and organized its pitch around three industries: health, manufacturing, and defense and public sector. A wearer sees digital content composited over the visible room through the headset’s transparent goggles; the page’s own case studies describe surgeons at UC Davis Children’s Hospital reviewing 3D reconstructions of MRI and CT scans through a Magic Leap headset before separating conjoined twins, and a manufacturer using the platform to cut new-hire training time. None of that content is visible to someone standing nearby without a headset of their own.

How it works

The company’s page describes Magic Leap 2 as ‘a lightweight, wearable computer’ delivering ‘enterprise-ready solutions’ through partner software such as Brainlab’s Mixed Reality Viewer and Taqtile’s Manifest, run over the device’s optics and its tethered compute unit. A later, more general technology overview from the company describes its optics business as delivering ‘ultra-light eyepieces with crisp visuals in a wide range of FOV options,’ language that describes a combiner lens system rather than a claim to interference-recorded holography.

Viewing conditions and limits

Neither cited page states a specific field-of-view figure, brightness level, or dimming specification for Magic Leap 2 itself, so those numbers cannot be verified from the documents examined here and are omitted rather than repeated from unverified secondary claims. What the company’s own material does establish is the deployment context: the device is marketed and sold to enterprise customers through direct sales and partner software, not as a retail consumer product, and its case studies describe supervised professional use — surgical planning, factory training — rather than everyday personal use.

What it is not

Magic Leap 2’s own marketing frames it as an enterprise augmented-reality computer, not as a hologram generator or a display that projects an image into open space for unaided viewing. The imagery its own case studies describe — a 3D reconstruction of a patient’s anatomy, a training overlay on a machine — is composited through the headset’s optics for the wearer alone, the same structural limit described for the company’s first headset four years earlier.

  • Is a stated field-of-view or brightness number sourced to the manufacturer, or is it missing entirely, as in the pages examined here?
  • Is the product being sold to consumers or licensed to enterprise customers through a sales team, as Magic Leap 2 was?
  • Does the case study describe a shipped, supervised professional use, or a marketing demonstration?

Magic Leap 2’s repositioning toward enterprise customers did not change the basic optical fact carried over from its predecessor: the displayed content remains private to the wearer, composited through headset optics rather than emitted as a hologram into the room.
