Google's Android XR launch named a headset it had not yet shipped

How it works

Google's post describes Android XR as an operating system, 'created in collaboration with Samsung', combining prior investment in AI, AR and VR, opened to developers on day one through ARCore, Android Studio, Unity and OpenXR. The mechanism by which any given headset displays imagery is not specified in this announcement; Google states only that headsets let wearers 'fill the space around you with apps and content' and use the Gemini assistant to answer questions about what is seen. Google names Qualcomm as the chip partner and lists Lynx, Sony and XREAL as additional device makers building on the same platform, alongside continued work with Magic Leap.

Viewing conditions and limits

Google's own language keeps a careful line between the platform, which it says is released that day as 'a preview for developers', and the headset, which it says would only 'be available for purchase next year.' No public hands-on demonstration, pricing or shipping date for Project Moohan appears in this post. Google's current Android XR page, retrieved 16 September 2026, shows that the same device has since shipped under the name Samsung Galaxy XR, stating 'Galaxy XR is here', alongside a newer XREAL AURA glasses product 'coming this fall.'

What it is not

At the time of the December 2024 announcement, Project Moohan was not a shipping consumer product; it was a hardware codename attached to a software platform preview, and Google's own wording treats the two as separate milestones. The announcement is also not evidence of a holographic or free-space display technology: Google's post never describes the optical mechanism inside any Android XR headset, only the software layer running on top of whatever hardware a partner builds.
